The egg has been a symbol of life in the Ukraine and other Slavic countries since ancient times. It was customary to give decorated eggs denoting stages of life in the spring. Colorful symbols representing nature and passed from mother to daughter enlivened the surfaces of eggs called pysanky.
In this video Father Paul Luniw (St. Michael's Byzantine Catholic Church, Terryville, CT), will demonstrate the art of pysanky. Video by David DelPoio
This is wonderful. A very good explanation as well as demonstration. I now understand the meaning and think I might be able to do this. Thank you Father Paul.

Lovely to see you are still painting Pysanky. I can recall you on British BBC's Blue Peter children's program when you were still a teenager. You inspired me to paint pysanky with my father. I tried to follow your designs but my father had his Lemko designs which were very bold and using one colour normally red or green. Simple but effective.
