Perhaps they joined because they wanted to? I know many wealthy friends who have joined the army, don't think that all soldiers are poor, because that is just rediculous. Many people who are poor are immigrants wanting to gain their citizenship in America, because there are actual possibilities for them. Many wealthy people want to support the American army, and are interested in combat, or tactical formations, anything like that.
