I interpret this totally different from all the other commenters...

I see it as a dog as the narrator, his "best friend" aka "the man" was his owner. The owner could no longer keep the dog and abandoned him, leaving him to wonder what he did wrong. Then, another man came by and rescued the dog and gave him a second chance at a happy life..
