I've noticed many people drive vehicles with inoperative chokes. Even though chokes can be intimidating, repairing and adjusting them actually is very simple.

So, stop pumping that accelerator and follow along as we look at how chokes work and how to repair them.

  • When i hit the gas with the engine off the choke doesent snap shut ?? i dont know why ? i have a 78 el camino with a electric automatic choke

  • @brandon1997bmx the choke coil may need tightened by loosening the screws and rotating counter-clockwise

  • Hi, I have a scooter with a 150cc 4 stroke engine. Since you know your auto chokes, , What would happen if a auto choke, suddenly fell completely off the carburetor?

    How would the engine perform?

  • @Hooverdarnit probably wouldn't affect it unless it created a vacuum leak. Of course, it would also be hard to start.

  • Hi Tyler, so I recently replaced the fuel filter on my rochester 4bl on my 79 caddy and I am having that problem that you specifically talked about in one of your videos. I replaced the filter and now it drips from the inlet nut housing. I it took it back off and i either dropped it the first time and didn't realize or something because its not there now. Could you by any chance give me the dimensions of the gasket or where to find the dimensions so i can have Napa punch me out a new one? Thanks

  • @piroguy14 I don't have access to that info unfortunately. Your best bet would be to take the filter housing with you, but keep in mind that gasket is nylon(plastic), not paper or rubber. You can also check the replacement filters to see if they include a seal. I often buy a carb kit just to use for spare gaskets, it'll have one in it.

i rotated the the choke coil counterclockwise and the choke plate did snap shut but i started it and it idled really high not normal choke idle and and it acted like the idle was slowing down but it just started idling high again ?? please help me im lost ???????????????????

  • @WhoSaidTyler

ok i will try that and respond

  • @WhoSaidTyler It's been easy to start but I've only started in inside my house, or immedeiately after getting it outside, or outside while the engine is still warm. (Too cold to work on it outside here in Minnesota.)

There seems to be a air channel created when the enricher is bolted to the side of the carb.

Does that sound like something that would cause a misfire at (and only at) higher speed?

  • i have a 1978 rochester quadrajet 4mv my fast idle is out of adjustment it is hard to choke when cold my carb number is 17058213 please help me to adjust my fast idle

  • There u go. Cant do it right unless its on the kitchen table. Thumbs up!
