Why do these words mean the opposite when they have the same root?

  • Perhaps Awful could be used as a positive if there were an emphasized pause between the syllables... Maybe it could catch on as slang, and evolve, or in this case revolve.

  • Finally, a woman with intelligence who isn't afraid to show it. I have a question for you. The phrase "used to" seems out of place in writing. As in, "I used to be handsome before my hair fell out." How did the word "used" change meaning so much from the standard definition? It appears to be a verb in that form as well, but it's meaning is so much different from it's standard verbal or adjective form.
