  • @Dannys998877 Having re-watched much of the series I'd like to retract my comment about shaky foundations. This is a good and important guide to the changing worldview which has shaped the world we live in.

    However, I still don't buy the idea of a "national character" I'm afraid. If racial stereotyping is a valid historical tool I'm a Dutchman ;-)

  • @TomfromExeter I didn't catch a reference to "German National Character" on this or the previous clip. But certainly a comment about "latent violence and hysteria" and the "leader for which the German people is always waiting." Well, Lord Clark lived through both world wars. And he saw the blitz. It was surely the German national character which was a disaster for the entire twentieth century world. Maybe the German character has changed, but I wouldn't bet heavy money on it.

  • Clark's observations on the 'German national character' confirm my suspicion that this series has rather shaky intellectual foundations.

    Thoroughly entertaining though - I love Clark's wry twinkle
