I've thought about this: Back in the (hey)day, it was the norm for punk rockers to both big themselves up, & also come across as thicko hard men. Clearly this was mostly (but not always) an act. Give Rotten/Lydon his due, mind, he was always confrontational but never hid his intelligence.

Watching the recent interviews with Vanian & Cornwell, they came across as almost posh in the way they spoke.

And let us not forget that the monosyllabic early Joe Strummer was a Public schoolboy!

  • @bodsnvimto Dave Vanian is an absolute gent, notice how he always acknowledges the crowd by saluting them when he comes on stage, doesn't do many interviews but,as you say, rather charming.

I got it from the interviews I remember seeing him do, along with his appearance on Juke Box Jury, but in retrospect I was probably wrong to label him as such; no doubt it was largely an act, just bigging himself up & playing to a public image fitting with the musical genre. Rather like a lot of today's rappers I suppose.

I'd be interested to see him interviewed now. I've recently seen Hugh Cornwell & Dave Vanian interviewed & they came across as rather charming & erudite.

  • @redpunk1 Maybe not bored as much as disillusioned.

  • @redpunk1 Not all musicians crave popularity. Lots of private-type people were unfortunately thrust into the spotlight by their music, and everyone dealt with it in their own way. Dee Dee Ramone acted stupid just so people would leave him alone. I don't blame Pursey at all, nor would I be offended. not everyone likes being social but it is expected of musicians. I'm sure he was bored with the rock-n-roll circus/swindle..

  • @Snoep76239 Can't knock that he's a great frontman but he's difficult to like in person speaking from experience and other peoples accounts, could be his ego or maybe he just doesn't like people much or maybe just bored with the whole rock n roll circus.

  • @bodsnvimto Why do you think he's so egocentric? (Curiosity, not a dis.)

  • Fantastic ENERGY, hope, compassion and RAGE;- all perfectly blended. Ya can't beat that with a stick.

  • Gewnna bee yah bawshtal-----bray-kaut!!!!!!

  • sham were a great live band ,one of the best at that time 78/79 but he just couid'nt tame the beast, the boneheads, the sham army,no one could control them fuckers and they could'nt behave themselfs, so they were banned from most london venues, which was good coz you could see bands play before you had a ruck..
