Buffalo Bill Cody's relationship with Native Americans is often misrepresented. He was trusted and respected by men like Sitting Bull and Black Elk, and he defended the Native people to a hostile White press. For example, he said once: "In nine cases out of ten where there is trouble between white men and Indians, it will be found that the white man is responsible. Indians expect a man to keep his word. They can't understand how a man can lie.”

Cody was a member of various fraternal organizations including the Masons so this might be a "secret handshake". If this film clip was made in 1917 he's only got a couple more months to live. Bill in his prime was over 6 feet tall so he's shrunk a bit here which is normal for a man in his early '70s.
