For the Thomas cake did you cover each part in fondant separately and then put it together?

I'm looking at all the tutorials cause I want to make my 2 yr old grandson the same cake....

I'm a little worried about making the tank with rice crispy treats..since I have to improvise...can you help me....

what kind of cake did you make...was it a pound cake or chocolate??

the engine was red velvet and the box car was funfetti. we chose to use rice krispies for the front part in order to get the correct shape.
