CAMPBELL RIVER - RCMP in Campbell River are continuing their investigation following the seizing of two submachine guns from a home in the Willow Point area.
Police were called to a home in the 2200 block of Milford Road by concerned neighbours who saw a home with the front door wide open and the owner's dogs outside. When RCMP arrived they identified themselves and entered the open doorway to ensure nobody was experiencing difficulties inside. RCMP discovered two submachine guns in open view.
Officers seized the weapons and are now investigating why the homeowner had them despite the fact he is prohibited from being in possession of either real or replica weapons of any sort.
RCMP Corporal Brian Brown confirmed the owner's claim the weapons were non-functioning because the barrels had been welded shut but notes five working barrels were in a nearby spare parts box and could easily be changed out to allow the guns to fire. 9mm ammunition was also found near the weapons.
The weapons are being shipped to the firearms crime lab in Vancouver as the investigation continues.
