These two collaborated on this from 1950 thru 1952. Prokofiev later slightly revised it and changed the name from the Second Cello Concerto. He collaborated with others many times throughout his career, with great success.

A famous happening, Kamu had just won the Karajan competition being in his early twenties.autodidact, and chose going his own path by doing for instance this concert (for first time, you can see him having difficulties following Rostropovich) and Karajan didn´t like it.

@f4p54uc3 true, thats what i mean. i just cant hear the opening any other way now.

@Mizzles240 You mean you LIKE his interpretation more. Because Rostropovich not only premiered and composed part of this piece, you really can't question if his interpretation is 'better' or 'worse'. I'm guessing his interpretation is closest to Prokofiev's intent.

would you guys throw me down the stairs if I said matt allen's interpretation is better?

Chills just listening to that tone! I wish I had seen him in concert. Ah, for a time machine.

That conductor is the Fourth Musketeer. Just look at him at the beginning of the video!

I heard Rostropovich play this live in Washington, DC at Constitution Hall in 1965. It was the most amazing experience of my life. For me he was and will always be the greatest cellist to ever walk this earth.

@tobster5100 Also Rostropovich has custom endpins so that he could have his cello tilted at his preferred angle
at 4:00 it looks like his end pin is bent.

@tobster5100 It is bent. This was in the days before the Stahlhammer endpins.

Remember, it is the soloist that sets the tempo and the conductor is supposed to follow him (or her) and led the orchestra at the correct tempo. If Slave felt the tempo was too fast at that point, he would (and does) play it the way he feels is correct and the conductor should follow.
