Bon Portage Island is located off the coast of Shag Harbour in southwestern Nova Scotia. At over 300 acres, it is one of Nova Scotia's last remaining large, unspoiled coastal islands. It's also one of the province's most ecologically important islands as it provides habitat for thousands of colonial breeding birds, including the largest colony of Leach's storm-petrels south of Newfoundland and Labrador.

A groundbreaking new partnership between Acadia University and the Nova Scotia Nature Trust has worked to ensure that Bon Portage Island will be permanently protected through a conservation easement agreement. The two organizations have committed to work together to protect a series of environmentally sensitive properties owned by Acadia. This is the first time in Canadian history that a university has partnered with a land trust.
