Nice. I wish I were able to stand being close to such a potent source. I am too chicken. lol The highest I have puts off all of 62 CPM lol a rounding error by comparison

I think you may be using some sort of lead alloy in those plates without much lead. you should have been able to knock down the gama rate much better than that. Also try using a glass of water between the geiger counter and the sample.

good idea about the water. however, it was proper "roofing lead", so it was 99.9% pure. lead is pretty much overrated for shielding ionizing radiation, especially as it transforms beta into gamma.

If you want to get really scientific, measure the rate for each additional sheet and plot a graph of log(rate) vs. thickness of Pb in mm, to get the exponential shielding coefficient! It should plot as a straight line but use Excel to fit an exponential trendline to your graph.

a rechargabe battery ("accumulator") that uses lead acid. it's commonly used in high-power appliances, such as uninterruptible power supplies for computers.
