The reaction between ammonium thiocyanate and barium hydroxide octahydrate is endothermic. It absorbs heat from the surroundings. As a result, the temperature of this reaction will drop quickly. This causes the beaker used to freeze to the wooden board. In this video, the beaker was able to hold approximately 9kg.

  • now to make enough to refreeze the ice caps...

  • Japanese created a plastic bag containing these two substances separated, when you hit the bag they mix and can cool you in a hot, sunny day :D

  • freaking dH = Tds

  • @grayshorts Because heat or energy is converted into something else in the chemical reaction, and surrounding heat will flow into the place of reaction (now very cold) in order to reach thermal equilibrium (usually from higher temperature to lower). That's why when heat is absorbed the temperature drops.

  • As heat is absorbed the temperature drops?

    Kind of confusing.

  • wow... if that rxn came into contact with skin... oouch

  • yes very cool

  • awsome
