July 24, 1983, the Kansas City Royals and New York Yankees play the infamous "Pine Tar Game." With his team behind 4-3 George Brett hits a two-run homer in the ninth inning to give the Royals a 5-4 lead. Yankee Manager Billy Martin noticed that Brett used excessive pine tar on the bat handle, At Martins urging, umpire Tim McClelland, ruling that Brett's bat had excessive pine tar, called him out and mayhem ensued. American League President Lee MacPhail will later reverse the decision saying that the umpire's call went against the spirit of the rule. The game will be resumed from that point on August 18th.
