Great video! Sharp knives are SO IMPORTANT! I wasn't a consistent reed maker at all until I figured that one out. Also, in order to have a sharp enough knife you will probably have to continue sharpening your knife throughout the reed making process. This helps you avoid using pressure on the reed and taking off too much cane by accident--which is a very easy way to ruin the corners of the tip!

Now for the first time I searched oboe-reed making. I was quite impressed with your presentation. Thank you for the time and effort you share with your fellow oboists! Personally, I switched from brass (mostly euphonium) that I'd played for over 30 years to something new and interesting...the Oboe. I thought that I knew music and how to practice, so a year of steady work would make me reasonably proficient. HA! Ten years later I'm starting to get a clue! I love it! Need to start reed making now.

This, Is absolutely amazing! Its extremely similar to making a hunting bow. Where you would scrape material from the part facing the archer, until the bow bends evenly. I play chanter, and buy plastic reeds, and Always wondered about reeds. Great video! cheers!!

"THE DOUV"??? that's funny!! I've never heard that one before!
When do you need to start making your own oboe reeds? I'm studying grade 5 now, is it something I need to start thinking about?

I would not start until you have your technique down, just work on playing the oboe and find some ok reeds to use until you are ready. Maybe start the reed making process a couple of years before university with an oboist who knows how to make reeds properly.

Do you know how to get rid of fibres left inside the reed? They're quite annoying :)

I use a sharp razor blade and flat plaque to take off the inner ear if I missed taking it off before tying the reed. Maybe I'll do a video for you.

No, I always trying and have a sharp knife from start to finish. A dull knife can push the sides open.
