That looks very much like a hardware problem, rather than been related to the OS X update. There is a known manufacturing problem with the Nvidia 8600 chip which is used in those particular MBPs. Symptoms are corrupted screen display just like yours, or totally dead. Apple is aware of the problem, and have even extended the warranty to cover the faulty displays. Take it to the Genius Bar and see what they say.
