A lot of people assume that the square area appears because of the accumulated free space between the shapes. I can tell you that it has nothing to do with that. The only reason I had trouble fitting some of the pieces in place is because my cuts were not accurate. Try this puzzle yourself. Follow the link below for the template.

    I have solved part of it, It's because the two small objects covers 8 Squares, but then he puts them in a position, so they would have to cover 9 squares, But where does the last Square hide in the first place? It has something to do with the 2x4 and 3x3. Thats as far as I have gotten.
