the Saint John Sea Dogs continued their dominance over the Halifax Mooseheads with a 7-3 win Saturday.
It was the 15th straight win for the Sea Dogs over Halifax, as 4,409 fans watched Saint John's final home game before Christmas, a festive affair that featured the annual Teddy Bear Toss.
Danick Gauthier had a hat trick for the Sea Dogs to reach the 30-goal plateau for the first time in his career. Tomas Jurco added a goal and three assists, while Stephen Anderson, Kevin Gagne and Ian Saab chipped in singles. Saab's goal was his first of the year. Devon Oliver-Dares, Grant West and Oliver Cooper had two assists each and Mathieu Corbeil made 20 saves for the win. Saint John remains first overall in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with a 26-9-0-1 record.
Darcy Ashley, Matthew Boudreau and Andrew Ryan had the Halifax goals and Alexandre Grenier tallied two assists. Zachary Fucale made 23 saves on 29 shots before giving way to Marc-Olivier Daigle, who stopped two of three in the final 7:19.
The teams renew acquaintances Sunday in Halifax, a 3 p.m. start.
Anderson opened the scoring at 9:51, burying a feed from Stephen MacAulay with a one-timer from in front of the net. Devon Oliver Dares had the other assist on Anderson's fifth of the year, which cued a downpour of teddy bears and other stuffed animals for the annual Teddy Bear Toss.
Gauthier extended the lead at 11:11, taking a backhand pass from Oliver Cooper and finishing to make it 2-0. Jurco notched the other assist on the goal.
The Mooseheads cut the lead in half on Ashley's power-play goal at 15:47 of the second, but Gauthier restored the two-goal cushion at 7:52 of the second. The overage forward, wearing the captain's C, took a feed from Jurco on the left wing and fired a shot from the left-wing faceoff dot for his second of the night and 29th of the year.
Jurco made it a 4-1 game when Aidan Kelly sent him in on a breakaway and his shot beat Fucale to the blocker side at 13:27 of the middle frame. Jason Cameron had the other assist on the goal, Jurco's 20th.
Gauthier completed the hat trick with another goal on a power play at 11:11 of the third period. With West screening in front, Gauthier snapped home a shot from the right-wing circle. West and Durepos had the assists on Gauthier's 30th goal, which surpassed his career total of 29 heading into the season.
Boudreau got one back just 18 seconds later but Gagne restored the lead on another power play at 12:41. Again West provided the screen as Gagne got a wrist shot through for his fourth of the year. Jurco picked up the other assist.
Ryan made it 6-3 with an unassisted marker at 15:17, but Saab struck four minutes later to round out the summary. Saab fired a shot from the left point for his first of the season, with assists from Anderson and Oliver-Dares.
