I saw a doco on movies, and apparently how the industry all works is that something like 6 out of 8 films that flop completely and never make anything back, 1 out of 8 break even (ie, Serenity), and then and 1 out 8 are successful that they they can pay for the flops on it's. So using this is reference, calling Serenity a failure is pretty darned fallacious as it still made a better return than most of the movies out there.
Once again, not sure why this is hard to understand. I said, "Serenity lost money at the box office." Why are people misunderstanding that statement? I said nothing about the DVD sales. They made about 9-10 million on those sails. So the overall profit for the film was close to 10 million. Thats still considered a financial failure by studios. They want a much larger return on such a huge investment especially considering sequels usually bring in considerably less money.
