Don Nutbeam explains that while many oppose the global spread of companies like McDonald's and Coca-Cola, their wide distribution network could be used to improve global health. "Can we as public health activists not try to close McDonald's down but change what they sell?"

-----

Pandemics like SARS and swine flu capture the world's attention. But public health issues like obesity in developed countries and AIDS in the developing world are greater killers.

As life expectancy increases, health care costs seem destined to spiral out of control. The financial crisis is forcing belt tightening around the world. How can we achieve sustainability in human health? - Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Professor Don Nutbeam, a world-renowned expert in public health, is currently Vice-Chancellor at the University of Southampton. His career has involved senior positions in universities, government, health services and an independent research institute. Between 2000 and 2003 he was Head of Public Health in the UK's Department of Health, leading policy development within the Department and across government on a range of public health challenges.

  • Did anyone actually watch the video? He's not saying McDonald's is healthy, he's saying that if it WERE healthy, its low prices and wide reach could be a huge game changer in world health.

Whether or not they will, that's another story. It has nothing to do with the NWO and everything to do with capitalism. Their goal right now is to do everything as cheaply as possible, and unless governments penalize them in some way, I doubt anything will change.

  • No people failing to take better care of themselves and realizing they need to work out after slamming down a burger, fries and a coke is.

Stop blaming other people for your issues. Take some fucking responsibility for your own life.

  • if they want there are a lot of possible ways to do that..i agree with what he's saying: Maximize the health benefits, minimize the health harm:

  • @m0nkeybl1tz yeh dude to true they cant make healthy food last as long as be are profitable as they can with the status quo, everyone gets exploited in this system even the people supporting it

  • @purplecharger88 THAT'S capitalism

  • yes yes yes

    collaboration compromise cooperation

omg don nutbeam, ive read his books - he's a great author!

  • you people are on lsd

  • The isuue here is not only about changing the corporate strategy of MacDonals or CocaCola, but about convincing consummers to buy those products.

  • But McDonald's sells food that's the same everywhere. That's not possible except by growing it through Big Agriculture. Big Agriculture is a big part of our unhealthy planet...and their unhealthy products are a big part of unhealthiness.

This proposition is a logical fallacy.

  • His point is instead of saying "Mcdonalds is bad horrid food shut it down!" but say "Mcdonalds is a big well known company put in more healthier foods which could go out too more people"

  • Sensible!!
