That's because today's cars are heavier due to mandated safety and emissions components.
Today's cars can operate at higher speeds with less noise and go much longer before needing maintenance.
So there's the reason. It's not a conspiracy.

Amazing that they could get all that MPG on all those smaller cars back in the day! Yet, with all the tech we have today, they are still struggling to get that amount of MPG!
