Antonio Caldara (c. 1670-1736)
Maddalena ai piedi di Cristo
"Pompe inutili"
Maria Cristina Kiehr, soprano
Orchestre de la Schola Cantorum Basiliensis
dir. René Jacobs

Pompe inutili,
che il fasto animate,
non sperate
di dar più tormento al cor.
Ite a terra
vili immagini d'error.

Translation:

Worthless finery,
inflating vaingloriousness,
do not hope
to torment my heart any longer.
Drop to the ground,
vile images of sin!
(Translation: Liesel B. Sayre)

Übersetzung:

Unnützer Pomp,
der du den Prunk belebst,
hoffe nicht,
dem Herzen noch mehr Qualen zu bereiten.
Geht zu Boden
ihr elenden Bilder der Sünde.
(Übersetzung: Nicoletta Gossen)

  • That oratorio is so emotional and full of deep feelings ...

The cruel combat between celestial and earthly love into Maddalena's soul is emotionally fully expressed through Maria Cristina's beautifull voice ..

  • I feel that my words, however praiseworthy, ultimately fail to deliver justice to this incredible piece. It is purely sublime, and entirely faithful to its noble subject matter. This is without a doubt my favourite work by Caldara, and its inspirational qualities can only be experienced by listening...my commentary fails to express its power more than one's own ears can understand. Grazie, grazie...
