That's because the trumpets are playing with good tone quality and sounding rich and mellow, like a trumpet should. They aren't trying to blow the horn off the bell and scream all over the place. That's why SMB sounds different from other high school bands. That's what we call a mature sound.

It's a group of elementary, middle, and high school kids. In this video, the youngest is 9 and the oldest is 18...

He was on trumpet. This performance was in May, and he started playing in January. He picked up really quickly and having him perform with the big kids was the best way to reward him. Besides, the band doesn't hold auditions or have any prerequisite requirements, so it's less about talent and more about hard work and one's willingness to learn....
