Daisy & Onslow, my Sulcata tortoises, prove that you are never too old for a 'backyard booty call' on a warm October day in Phoenix. And yes, he really does make that sound - the neighbors can hear it!
Maybe some sub-species, but can't find info on that. The shell can be different colors depending on diet and environment - a lighter shell keeps them cooler in this hell of heat we have in Phoenix summers. When I got them the male's scutes were much darker, but the scutes have grown lighter since I have had them.
These are a pair of Geochelone Sulcata (aka: African Spurred Tortoise), wich can grow to over 30" (83 cm).
