Severus Snape and Lily Evans: always.

I cannot imagine what Lily had in her mind when she chose James Potter instead of Severus....

James is portrayed as a bully from his childhood,and worse in early youth:arrogant and cruel,though it has since become brave and loving to Lily. But all this is forgiven him by Lily. Severus says just one word at a time of anger,a word that he did not think,and he is not forgiven, inspite of all the years of love and friendship in childhood.

@low4now Snape's patronus is the same that Lily's had, this cannot be his original patronus, it became his one because of the great love for Lily, the fact that the patronus is still the same after all this time, means that Snape's soul has been changed forever by his love for Harry's mother, he has been and forever will be Lily's. So Severus has always protected Lily's son not because of the promise he made many years before to Dumbledore, but because of the love he still has for Lily.
