They relaly should've added this or something about this one way or another. After watching each movie 5 times it always through me off because one of Michael's Lines when introducing Tom Hagen was: "He'll make a great consigliere one day" and then next thing you know he is the consigliere. If I would've known then what I know now, I would've relized Michael had not yet known that the current consignliere was dieing from cancer on the day of the wedding.

They should have left this scene in, if for no other reason than to let the audience know who Genco is when he is referred to in other parts of the film. That's the only problem I have with the whole trilogy - certain truths are expected to be known by the audience without prior information. This for example and also the time scale in 1. Maybe that's what Coppola was trying to get you to do - watch the film again to see what you missed.

@Jimmy1tooth To be honest i always got the feeling this was a great idea that they maybe didnt implement properly, i mean if they had suggested genco had a serious mental illness as a result of whats killing him it could have been much cooler, but they just didnt explain why genco was acting like a retard, could have worked under the right circumstances, but under these you're right its just dumb
