A downtown building that once symbolized Nebraska City¹s prestigious retail district was declared unsafe this winter and demolished. The building at 807 Central Ave. was most recently a pet store that never opened for business, but it had been part of downtown boon that followed World War II.
It was home to Woolworth Company and later Livingston¹s Department Store. Brandt Excavation of Lincoln took down the two-story brick structure, which was actually made up of two buildings. The city, which agreed to take ownership of the property and pay for demolition, is planning to construct additional supports for the walls of the Sewing Basket and Brown¹s Shoe Fit.
Although the sidewalk was closed and Central Avenue closed to eastbound traffic, the stores were able to stay open through the demolition. Duane Koehlmoos said some customers were wary of the rumblings heard through the walls during demolition, but said it went well overall. In a grant application to the state Department of Economic Development, city officials indicated a desire to build a passageway in the empty lot that would connect Central Avenue to the Memorial Building. Mayor Jack Hobbie indicated, however, that the plan is not set in stone.
