Sometimes they use MAGNETS for the erase head. IF someone used a demagnetiser on the heads, they could have caused the erase head to lose its magnetism. A demagnetiser can also magnetise, you touch it to the ERASE head (record mode, no tape) whilst it is ON, then turn it OFF whilst it is still touching the erase head. IF it is touching something when you turn it OFF, it will magnetise. To properly demagnetise, you must move it away slowly before you tun it off.
