Called "fire ants" in Borneo, they are really a species of army ants. This species from Borneo acts similar to the well studied Eciton burchelli of the Neotropics and even attracts tree-shrews, skinks, and a large variety of birds. This is possibly the first example of ant-following in Asia. I had these ants examined by experts. They are a species of Leptogenys which is not from true army ant lineage but they exibit army ant behavior. This is actually an unsubscribed species from a little know genus that is known typically to be nocturnal raiders of other social insects. These ants create dense swarms that hunt arthropods and small animals in the leaf litter and lower trunks of trees. Unlike E. burchelli, they nest under ground and do not form bivouacs.
