Cindy Winter was only 29-years-old when she noticed blood in her stool while she was working as a Merchant Marine on the seas of Asia. Knowing her family history of poor colon health, she got to a doctor quickly.
Winter was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and doctors surgically removed her entire colon and more than 20 polyps because of her family history of colon cancer.
Being diagnosed with colorectal cancer at such a young age ended up as a positive experience for me, Winter said. It led me to a career in health care and I am now able to encourage others to know their family history and to be screened starting at age 50 or earlier if the family history is there.
Starting out as an ultrasound tech after her fast-paced career on the high seas was abruptly ended, Cindy has worked her way up in the Radiology industry and now serves as Executive Director of Imaging Services at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center (FHMMC).
