A description of the idee fixe from Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique, excerpted from a New York Philharmonic Young People's Concert broadcast, explained by Leonard Bernstein and demonstrated by the flutist Julius Baker.
I know a man whose idée fixe was the thought that all the pawls, stops, latches and holders constantly pall on him and he tried to fixate to a kind of fixation and though there were pro forma matrimonies and wedlocks at those dummy addresses for those sham shammers!
God! He gets it! I thought the exact same thing when I first heard this. Berlioz has captured the love of a woman perfectly in musical form. It's awesome that Bernstein understands it so well.
