Cutting out hair in Photoshop can be a nightmare - especially if you try to use paths to do it. Here is a method using layer styles that can be adapted to suit the background.

  • At around 1:52, when I hit delete, it didn't delete anything for the layer mask. I did Select All -> Press Delete on the Keyboard. Nothing happened.

  • This is usually because the default foreground and background colors are the wrong way around in the tools palette. If you select all, click the tiny 'Default Foreground and Background Colors' at the bottom of the tools palette and make sure the layer mask is selected in the Layers palette and then press delete, it should have the desired effect.

  • out or option key?? where the hell is that?

  • That's the ALT key - not 'out' key

  • What about if your background is more than one colour, e.g an actual image

  • A good question - and one for another tutorial I'm afraid. Here's a good one: (search for "photoshop curly hair selection tutorial" by denmuel)

  • ...and if it doesnt have a white background? lol

  • @Jesusdragon737 This is more like a "I don't know what layer masks are" comment.

  • This is awesome. I'm a graphic designer and this works great.

The only problem I have however is when I shoot it over to illustrator, looks like the multiply layer gets flattened and I end up with the white residue- is there anyway to remedy this? Let me know.

  • @takertitan Don't blame the author, blame yourself for turning off your brain when things get a little bit more complicated and if you still want to blame someone, blame Adobe.

  • @Biederbeck05 Not it's not, since every image requires a different approach.

  • Another one who gives people the wrong impression how easy it is to extract hair by using the most simple image possible...sigh.

  • Would have been more impressed if your image actually had a background.

  • lol, i didn't even bother with this but your voice is very posh
