Human Figure Drawing Lesson Part 1: Overview

This tutorial introduces some basics to drawing people from memory and imagination. Draw a basic figure. Start with an idea of what you want the character to be doing. A pose. In the middle you have the hip region. Put the hip region down first. The joints of the legs are more on the outside than you may think. On the lower third, outside. The upper leg is the same length as the lower leg. When they are not foreshortened or receding from view they are the same length. Make an extended triangle. The Chest and hip region are more likely at an angle. The torso. For a normal, upright position. The two forms often counter, direction to each other. The neck sits on the upper front on the chest, not out of the top of the chest. Work from the central access of the head to work out where the head and neck go. The over-all shape of the head starts with a sphere or a drawn circle. Draw a line straight down for the jaw bone. These are guides and guess-work. This is an art, not science. In the long run estimating and guessing is faster, more fluid and is more interesting to your audience.
