This is my first attempt at tanning a deer hide. This is not an instructional video, but rather a documentation of my attempt at tanning. I already know I have much to improve on but could use some constructive criticism for the next hide.

  • @ fishbrew21 if u r going to get in to tanning hides i would recemmened u purchace one of the two handed fleshing knife makes it go alot faster

good lukc and just have fun

  • @faehellblade Faehellblade thanks for the advice. I have a great friend down in the states that uses a draw knife and I think I will follow it. It's cheaper than a fleshing wheel but seems to be much quicker. I wanted to do it as close to the traditional way as I could without brain tanning it. I might have a hide in the coming days and will be using a draw knife. Thanks for the encouragement and thanks for watching.

  • Fleshing a deer hide in your kitchen??!! I love it!! Crazy Canucks!

  • @SneakyC9 Haha, yeah it was getting too cold outside and the flesh was firming up. Good thing I had a tarp.

  • Yah I'm new to this also. I took all the meat off first it really helped. I used a sharp filet knife. All I did was get edge of the meat off with my fingers, and if you pull the meat up and away from the hide you'll see a little white almost clear membrane attaching it to the skin. Without applying any pressure just slowly touch the knife to the membrane. Its time consuming but it works. Just don't apply any pressure or you'll cut to deep. I'm going to start skinning my deer this way.

  • @wolfman852010 Thanks for the tip there wolfman, any and all are appreciated.

  • flesh it before you salt it and try not to do it if it is frozen.

  • nice man, and use a duller knife ! :)

don't need anything sharp to scrape the flesh

dull knife and more pressure :)

  • aye i agree with wolfman i just started tanning also and it is way way easier to scrape it first before the salting and again after you have salted =) and you can also tear at it and peal it off by grabbing it with a small pliers also or as being a chick i used my nails nicely however its kinda gross

  • i have just started the journey to making my own frqmedrum, started with a hide in my basement, no salt of anything. just started to remove the flesh with a $2 exacto knife....coming off easy. when i am not working on it i tossed it in teh freezer. Now i am moving on removing the hair with woodash...nice to see someone else learnign as they go...PS my husband wont let me deflesh in teh kitchen, he has shoeved me to the basement....hmmmm and they say girls are pussys! pftt

  • You can tan many different ways. I find that the easiest way is to do it right after skinning the deer. I use a dull draw knife. Hang the hide on the beam and lean up against the hide and beam. Draw knife away from yourself. Keep it wet while drawing. All of the meat/fat/ and membrane will come off.

  • flesh it first then salt
