White Pony by Deftones

Released in 2000 on Maverick.

Deftones are an alternative metal band from Sacramento, California. They formed in 1988 but didn't release their first album until 1995. This is their 3rd album.

Deftones were the shit back in the day. I was extremely fond of them. White Pony was a great album, both for fans and the band. It finally separated them from the dreaded "nu-metal" herd, the herd that is still rehashing the same, tired bullshit this very day.

White Pony is a very artistic and creative album. It has a concept loosely based around dreams and nightmares. Delirium, violence and romance are reoccurring themes. Songs deal with murder, sex, kidnapping, love, fights and maturing.

The Deftones really came correct on this album. They really clicked and all the instruments fall together perfectly. The production is flawless. Lots of distortion, all manner of effects, trippy atmospheric touches (courtesy of DJ Frank Delgado, now an official member) and Chino's trademark vocals.

Chino is really what separates Deftones from any other band. His vocal delivery is very unique and emotive. His crooning and shrieking has never been matched. He makes the most sinister and dark situations sound fun and enticing. He makes being gagged in the trunk of a car sound romantic. His lyrics are always very abstract and superbly written.

Deftones have never been a band to cater to metal elites, but rather cater to their fan base. Deftones fans like them because they blend they can blend delicacy with the heavy. They are always trying out new things, and are never satisfied to redo the same old thing.

I've listened to this album a million times. It's very complex, textured, varied, creative, impassioned, atmospheric and emotional. It is also very catchy and fun. Never turns into a cock fest. A solid album, except if your copy starts off with "Back to School".

That wasn't the bands idea. That song could have just remained a B-Side.

Deftones! One of my favorite bands as well. Adrenaline and Around The Fur are my albums of choice, White Pony is good though. Awesome review!

awesome album. yet another record we had in common as youths. the thing that really grabbed me about this album weren't the heavy songs that i loved from the deftones, it was the tracks like "digital bath" and "change". i remember around this time, stephan carpenter was talking about how he was getting into meshuggah, and you can actually hear that influence coming through in parts of "street carp" and "korea". i mean, it's not really in your face with a bunch of breakdowns, but it's there.

Dude u know ur shit about the deftones u just spit n their face with this bullshit review. Like ya back to school was their labels song, not theirs, u could have mentioned the deftones' preferred version 'pink maggit' also on the album. And u called the entire album 'commercial'? Are u fuckin mental? Deftones have never went commericial and never will because the industry is incapable of marketing a band light years beyond any fan base. Thats what makes them so special and their music so unique

White Pony was the Album that Changed my Life ha ha. I loved that Lp. Saturday Night Wrist was also Fantastic...But Most Fans think that SNW sounds like Team Sleep which I don't believe. DEFTONES4life. oh yeah Chi get well soon bro!
