*This is my first video tutorial, so as expected there are some flaws in it. Also, I'm aware that it's not an in-depth tutorial with audio, but I do plan on future tutorials being done with me narrating for better following. Until then, I've listed the steps below.
Video tutorial I made showing how to make a planet using Adobe Photoshop CS3. You can alter some steps and make different types of planets, but for this video I'll be listing the steps used to make this one. For reference, see www.artofgregmartin.com
-Start with a new image 500x500 pixels and fill it black
-Create a new layer
-Grab the marquee tool and make a nice circle
-Fill it black and keep the circle marquee selected
-Grab a soft brush 300 pixels and set the opacity for it around 30-40
-Set blend mode of brush to linear dodge
-Pick a color (I used 995a49)
-Brush on from 7:00 to 2:00
-Still using a 300 pixel soft brush, go to your brush settings
-Go down to texture and select a nice rocky pattern and set it to color burn
-Brush in the same direction as before, keeping the bottom right dark
-Go to filter/distort/spherize and put it at 100
-Repeat spherize, but this time only 25-50
-Cut the layer your planet is on and paste it on a new blank layer
-Name this layer "planet"
-Duplicate your planet layer and go to blending options
-Set blend mode to linear dodge with 0% fill
-Add an outer glow with blend mode set to linear dodge 100% opacity, and a size of around 14
-Pick a color for your outer glow (I used 459ab3)
-Add an inner glow with blend mode set to linear dodge 70% opacity, and a size of around 70
-Pick the same color that you used for the outer glow
-Create a new layer on top of your original planet layer
-Merge the planet layer with the effects, with the new blank layer
-Name this layer "atmosphere" and set the blend mode back to linear dodge
-Grab the eraser brush and erase between 3:00 and 6:00 on your atmosphere layer
-Duplicate your planet layer
-Go to filter/stylize/emboss
-Set the angle around 34, height at 1, and amount of 500%
-Go to image/adjustments/desaturate
-Duplicate the layer
-On the top embossed layer, use levels to increase the darkness
-On the bottom embossed layer, use levels to increase the lightness
-Set the top layer to linear dodge around 60% opacity
-Set the bottom layer to multiply around 70% opacity
-Create a new layer
-Apply image
-Go to adjustments/curves and mess around with the settings (I used output:122 / input:133)
-Go to filter/sharpen/sharpen
Congrats, you're done :) You can also add gradient maps or make other adjustments if you wanna be spiffy. Hope you enjoyed!
Do you mean textures for making planets, or textures for use in photoshop in general?
