Classic Game Room HD reviews the 2002 reworking of DEFENDER for Playstation 2 PS2. Does this remake of the classic arcade DEFENDER live up to the original?? Uh... Well, why exactly was this called Defender? Saving the Human Race from invading waves of aliens is usually a great reason to fly space ships and blow things up. In this complete re-imagined version of Defender players do just that, fly around and blow things up while saving humand from being turned into mutants. Sadly this game lacks the charm of the original and becomed tedious quickly with sloppy controls, a useless HUD (heads up display) and cluttered battles trying to pay homage to the original. Leave the defending to 2D horizontal side scrolling gameplay! While some players may enjoy the frantic challenge that Defender on PS2 provides, fans of the original will quickly shut it off in favor of the 1980 old school classic. This CGR review of Defender on PS2 from Midway has gameplay from Defender on Playstation 2 PS2 showing video game play in HD.
Just got it over the weekend. I at first thought the aiming and controls sucked, but after playing for a while I got used to it. I was rescuing and killing manti with ease. I do however agree that it's not for everyone. you need to have some pretty good handling of the ship to not miss colonists or power ups.

Used to play this game as a kid and just mess around and get stuck on the ground because I did not know what the controls were.

At least it's somewhat hilarious to see how the rescued civilians hang on to the player spacecraft's wings as if it was a leisured flight over a pasture.

Rented this back in the day and it wasn't bad at all. Certainly worthy of the name "Defender" -- it became insanely hard very quick. Wasn't good enough for $40-$50 purchase though but certainly worth $10-$15 used. And the original fanboys need to wake up, eat crow, and admit it: Stargate made Defender look like the glorified beta it was much like Smash TV did to Robotron 2084 ...
