@linus, why are you using the SMS verification when google have the Authenticator app in the app store?
ans as djGLCKR says you are supposed to use the application specific password feature of 2 step verification, that way if you were to loose access to the device/or forget to sign out/wipe the device you only have to Revoke that specific password rather than change your whole gmail password.

Actually, if you're linking a new device to your Google account, you must use the "Authorizing Applications and websites" option on your account security tab.
In here, you'll have to give a name to the password you want to generate (i.e.: MotoXOOM account), and Google will give you a 16-digit password, with a space between each 4 letter group. You must introduce that password (including the spaces) instead of your regular PW. That's how you link devices via 2-step verification.
