In this Juan's Tip Of The Week we review the benefits of Ground Cover. After you have planted your tomatoes and peppers, there are multiple reasons why you should put down a layer of newspaper or other material and then mulch / straw on top of it:
1. Plant Hydration: Quite simply, news paper and a mulch or straw on top of the paper will keep the moisture in the ground for your plant roots to stay moist.
2. Disease Prevention: The same strategy prevents soil borne diseases from splashing onto your lower plant leaves when it rains.
3. Drip Irrigation: Using drip irrigation or watering with soaker hose is critical in that when you are watering underneath that Ground Cover layer, you are keeping the moisture where it needs to be, you are efficiently utlilzing less water without dissipation, and by all means, never top water plants with a sprying device like you would use on your grass in the yard. That is not good for tomatoes and peppers.
There are many different types of paper you can use here, but free is always key here at Juan O' Sullivans Chile Pepper Farms. Just save your newspaper every week, and when the planting season comes around you will not have to worry about buying paper.
This is probably the easiest thing you can do for your gardens, with the greatest reward. Check out the 'Tip of the Week' on the video tab on the Juan O' Sullivan's facebook homepage.
