A life lesson from my great-uncle focused his young nephew's mind in a most unusual way. For the past four decades, his lesson has inspired meaning and direction to my life, as a human being, a brother, a parent, and my mission as a photographer and artist. The teachings of my great-uncle March Fourth McGowan, who lived to die at the age of 108, and whose body lies buried, to sleep with his ancestors, in Hardshell Cemetery in New Brockton, Alabama, were rare gems.
