Actress and goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie told a summit of business leaders and politicians on Friday (January 27) that she had discovered things about the United States that had made her ashamed.
"There are many things that as an American I've discovered in the last few years that have shocked me about my own country that I am very ashamed by," Jolie, a goodwill ambassador for the U.N. refugee agency, told an audience at the World Economic Forum.
Answering a question about the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which the United States has not ratified, Jolie said: "Yes, I'm absolutely ashamed of that. Being an American, I think it's horrible. I think that congress should ratify that and do that for children. If we really care about children how dare we not sign the Convention on the Rights of the Child."
Jolie, who uses her celebrity pulling power to draw attention to humanitarian crises in places such as Darfur, Chad and Pakistan, said being a mother had changed her perspective on the plight of parents and children in the developing world.
"Certainly as a mother, I look at the children differently because I think of my own and it always becomes very emotional. I'm certainly more aware of the plight of parents that are looking for food of their children and I can imagine what that must be like.
Jolie, who is pregnant, has two children, 4-year-old Maddox and Zahara, who just turned one. Maddox was adopted from Cambodia and Zahara from Ethiopia. Jolie said she was committed to raising the awareness of her children about global issues.
"My own children are very aware. My own children are aware almost by default because they are from these countries and so they learn about their own countries. My son will be learning about Pol Pot, he'll be learning about refugees, he'll be learning about landmines. He knows about them now. And my daughter will learn about Ethiopia and I pray that that country will stabilise and then when she's 16 she can spend time there."
Jolie recently changed their last names of her children to reflect Brad Pitt's status as their adoptive father.
The Oscar-winner and Pitt, whose child she is carrying, have reduced the global elite at Davos to star-struck autograph hunters, scrambling over each other to get a glimpse of the actress and her man.
