loved the song, but 41 years later I still don't know what on earth the song's meant to be about. Any ideas?

Hi i'm not sure if you got your answer to "where are the words"?Bottom Right of the the video you can see six items you can click on the left button has (CC) on it, just click on it and you can bring the lyrics on screen . Hope this helps

I just looked up and though about it and shook my head no.
Personally I love the song. He himself said that he sang off key or something like that.
