Actualy, hit and miss engines were designed for economy. (old tech.)there is no fuel usage during the 'miss' phase. it is coasting. This engine will run ALL day on 1 quart of gas. (with no load). when a load is applied, it will hit every forth stroke, like a normal 4 stroke engine. Hope that helps.

I wondered if a piezo could do this !

yeah, I was told it wouldn't work so... However, it was a new spark plug, and the spark is not very hot, so fouling a plug after shutdown can be a problem. It ran for many hours with no problems, but restarting with an oily plug....well, it wont. Perhaps a quick shot of ether. but alas we'll never know. This engine was sold to a museum, in brooks Oregon. Many thanks to 'flywheelfarm'
..the genius behind this engine.
