Sept. 7, 2010. Ohio Father Jeffrey York Arrested After Years of Alleged Domestic Abuse; Grand Jury Indictment Alleges Childrens Rape, Imprisonment at the Hands of the Father. An Ohio father of seven is sitting in a jail cell today faced with a list of domestic abuse charges including the alleged rape of his daughter and the year-long imprisonment of another child.
Police said they were tipped off to the abuse that Jeffrey York, 47, allegedly inflicted on his family after his wife went to police in December to tell them he had raped her daughter. "We went down there. She met us pretty much at the door, her and the children," Madison Township Police Chief Len Del Calzo said. "And we removed them from the home."
After a months-long investigation, a grand jury returned a seven-page, 19-count indictment that resulted in his arrest last week. He is now being held on $250,000 bond. His wife and seven children, ages 19 to three months, were moved to a safe house. In addition to two counts of rape that allegedly took place between September 1996 and October 1997 with a female child under the age of 13, York was also charged with five instances of gross sexual imposition, six counts of child endangerment, one count of aggravated menacing and five counts of domestic violence.
"They weren't like a traditional family, as far as most families go," Del Calzo said. "The children were home-schooled. They dressed in more of what I would call a 19th-century type of dress."
York has pleaded not guilty. His public defender could not be reached for comment.
Police described the children as cut off from the outside world with no friends or contact with others. "They were pretty well isolated," he said. "Didn't associate with the neighbors and didn't have much contact outside the immediate family."
One of the counts of child endangerment stems from a report that one of his children was locked into an 8-by-10-foot room on and off for a year with limited access to food, water, bathroom facilities, clothing and the rest of the family.
The room, police said, had been modified into a small space so the rest could be used for storage.
Del Calzo said authorities had no intention of pursuing child abuse charges against York's wife. And at least one of the children is a stepdaughter, he said.

09/03/2010. Family may have been abused for 15 years; Madison Township man accused of rape and torture. Madison Township, Ohio. More disturbing details are coming out surrounding the 19 count indictment of a Madison Township man. At a Saturday afternoon news conference, Madison Township police said Jeffrey York, 47, cut his family off from the outside world, committed sex crimes against a girl under the age of 13 and locked a child in her small bedroom for a year. "This case itself is is definitely disturbing," Madison Township Detective Dan Boerner said.
York was indicted Friday of two counts of rape, five counts of gross sexual imposition, six counts of endangering children, one count of aggravated menacing and five counts of domestic violence.
The crimes may have started around 15 years ago at a home Ledge Road, according to investigators.
Police said seven children were home schooled and did not have any friends or resources. Detective Boerner said one of the girls was locked in a room for a period of one year with limited access to the rest of the family. Detective Boerner said meals were brought to her and she was periodically allowed to leave to use the bathroom.
"Imagine an 8 by 10 bedroom cut down into thirds with 2/3 being storage and 1/3 actually being made available for living space," Boerner said.
The children's mother called police last December after one of the girls reported that she was raped several years ago by York police said. Police investigated and learned of other possible sex crimes against the girl as well as more abuse allegations against three boys between 2001 and 2007.
Lake County court records show York's wife received a civil protection order against her husband after the family was taken to a women's shelter. The family has since left the shelter and moved out of the home on Ledge Road. Court records also show that Jeffrey York filed for divorce in July.
York entered a plea of not guilty to the 19 criminal charges on Friday. His bond was set at $250,000. Police said if York is able to post bond, he'll be monitored by a GPS device and be ordered to have no contact with any of the alleged victims.
