The topic covered in the photo essay; The Russian revolution of 1905, links to the current NSW Board of studies stage 6 syllabus of 2009. The photo essay has been devised as an activity for the preliminary course, to be used in the mandatory list A case study from Europe; studying the decline and fall of the Romanov Dynasty. In this case study students will learn of Tsar Nicholas II, and will assess his reign as to whether he was a true autocrat.

This particular Photo essay attains to preliminary course outcomes; P1.1, P1.2, P2.1, P3.1, P3.4 and P4.1. The photo essay directly evaluates the role of Tsar Nicholas in the 1905 revolution whilst also unpacking the key features of the society at the time, and the key features of the revolution. The photo essay identifies ideas and concepts such as autocracy, industrialization and revolution, as well as asking relevant historical questions regarding the cause of the revolution. The photo essay puts forward the challenge for students to comprehend, identify and analyse the different perspectives presented regarding Nicholas' role in the revolution.

The photo essay is designed to be integrated into the unit after students have learnt of the 1861 edict of Emancipation of the serfs. Students should have a strong knowledge of serfdom and should also have covered the Russo-Japanese war of 1904 to a full extent. Students should also understand the definition of autocrat and should already have been exposed to the question; was Tsar Nicholas an autocrat? The photo essay should be used as a closure for teacher directed study on Nicholas as an autocrat and provides a research task for students to work on independently, researching as to whether Nicholas was an autocrat. A deeper study of the political, social and economic injustices in early twentieth-century Russia is a suited follow on exercise from this photo essay.
