As mentioned in this December 2007 clip from Syracuse's News 10 Now, lakes and ponds are beginning to freeze over and that means snowmobilers and ice fishermen will soon be taking to the ice.
If you're one of them, the experts say you should consider a float suit or jacket to keep warm and dry. It will also offer some protection in case you fall through the ice. The float suit keeps water away from your torso and has an inflatable pillow to keep your head above water.
"This float coat actually serves as a life jacket, it's something that you can purchase either online or through any one of the local outdoor sport shops and it provides you an opportunity to be wearing a PFD the entire time you're out there. And if you do fall in through the ice, it will protect your torso area, keeping you warm," said Dave White, New York Sea Grant Specialist. White says fatalities involving breaking through the ice can be prevented by planning ahead and keeping safety in mind.
