Invoking the Holocaust to Silence Criticism of Israels Crimes? NEVER AGAIN!

At 12 noon Sunday, January 4, 2009, Alan Goodman and Alice Woodward, correspondents for Revolution newspaper, displayed a 20-foot banner directly in front of the Museum of Jewish Heritage / Holocaust Museum at 36 Battery Place in Manhattan that read: After the Holocaust, the worst thing that has happened to Jewish people is the state of Israel.

Within fifteen minutes, the NYPD, along with the New York City Parks police, surrounded the banner and the people holding it with as many as 28 police cars with flashing lights.

Citations were issued by the Parks police for displaying a banner criticizing Israel with no permit. A court date on these charges, which carry a fine of up to $1000, is set for Jan 21.

After the citation was issued an intense standoff with police continued for two more hours. Squad cars with flashing lights closed the intersection near the museum, and police placed barricades in front of the banner and the people holding it, held out handcuffs, and repeatedly threatened to arrest those holding the banner if they wouldn't move (which they would not). After two hours, both the Parks Police and NYPD abruptly evacuated all their squad cars from the scene.

"Self-determination" per se cannot define whether a cause is just. Hitler actually invoked this in regard to German-speaking populations in Eastern Europe to justify terrible crimes. There is a larger picture of a world of oppression and exploitation that is the problem, and Israel is an enforcer of that. That said, how can a nation built on ETHNIC CLEANSING be justified as" self-determination," while the struggle of those removed from their homeland by ethnic cleansing be judged illegitimate?

"Never Again" should mean that "never again shall it be allowed that crimes against humanity can go on and people will be able to plead ignorance or impotence as an excuse for doing nothing to stop those crimes." Instead, Zionism and the state of Israel express and are used to indoctrinate and enlist Jewish people in the outlook of "never again will my people be fucked over, and anything that is justified as preventing that is allowable." There is a world of difference between those two outlooks

Zionism's primary justification is found in the UN declaration of human rights, which guarantees "the right of peoples to self-determination". Zionism, as the national liberation movement seeking to restore the right of self-determination to the Jewish people, acts in full agreement with international law. The actions of the Israeli governement, reprehensible though they may be, do not make Zionism itself any less legitimate or necessary.
