The United Nations commended the Governments resettlement programme. Minister Rohitha Bogollagama said that UN Deputy Secretary General Lynn Pascoe after a visit to the North heaped praise on the Government.
The Minister said he had bilateral discussions with the UN Deputy Secretary General on the traditional areas of how fast the resettlement will take place and how soon that Sri Lanka will be devoid of the IDPs. Assistance has been received from the international community and UN agencies which is highly appreciated.
The UN representative met the Minister at the Foreign Ministry. The meeting took place after Mr. Pascoes tour of Vavuniya. Their discussions centred on the welfare programme for the civilians
Briefing the media following the talks, Mr. Pascoe said the Government had extended optimum facilities to the civilians of the welfare villages. He said he met the civilians of the villages and also had viewed the massive programme mooted in the North. The Government is firmly dedicated to resettling the civilians. Mr. Pasco opined that he also monitored the removal of mines which earned his praise. He was confident that the civilians could be resettled soon after the removal of mines.
