Symphony No.39 in E flat major
Johann Chrysostomus Theophilus Wolfgang Mozart

I. Adagio - Allegro

I love the nocturnal feel of this Symphony, so I've uploaded it with modern photographs taken around Vienna at night rather than the usual period artwork. It was common for oboes to be replaced by clarinets in 18th Century performances of symphonies, as clarinet players were often readily available in towns with marching bands. However in this work, Mozart makes a concious artistic choice in scoring for an orchestra with clarinets in the place of oboes. In the manner of his earlier "mature" symphony, (The Prague symphony, No. 38) he adds a flute, two bassoons, two trumpets and timpani to the standard symphonic line up, although the 'cello part has less independence from the basso part. This scoring, along with the brooding introduction and hushed first theme, give this night-time feel to the work. Albeit not lacking in energy as the following tutti demonstrates, with wild leaps over a pulsating woodwind motor, Mannheimian rockets and rushing descending scales mirroring the introduction. This work has occassionally been dubbed "Mozart's Eroica", mainly due to the key and similarity in opening theme.

  • @TheEvilEmporerBunny Comparing Mozart with a box of printer paper is fairly pointless too, especially when it's off topic.

  • @dreck93 Different does not mean better. Comparing Justin Beiber and Mozart is like comparing green paint with a box of printer paper - They don't really have anything to do with each other.

  • Absolutely perfect relationship between Adagio & Allegro. Thumbs up JEG!

  • @TheCrazyCello i did. as soon as i wrote it i was like wait a second haha. i apologise for my mistake

  • @TheCrazyCello i think you missed the point...

  • @Cantormatis Phrasing and articulation is very good and the sound is clear, but I like the adagio little slower.
